The Old Testament lays the foundation of the new. The OT includes the system of sacrifice and atonement, and shows that it was not working. The OT shows that we need a savior, because we cannot live perfect lives. The OT includes so much prophecy that Jesus fulfills.

You wouldn’t be able to understand why Christ came to the world; knowing that His ancestors were actual human beings like us helps us better relate to Him and thus believe in Him. The entire foundation of Christ’s purpose is laid in the Old Testament.

The prophecies about Jesus in the OT help us understand stand Him more in the NT. The OT is also what Jesus and His disciples would have studied.

The Old teaches us about God, who He is and who we are. We need to know the old before the new.
