Why would a lack of knowledge of the Old Testament weaken our understanding of the New Testament?

We would not have the background we need to understand the New Testament completely. The Old and New Testaments are intertwined together and they also enrich one another.

Because The Lords sovereign plan laid out in the Old Testament is revealed in the New Testament. Most of the New Testament IS the Old Testament.

We wouldn’t fully understand why God sent his only son into the world to save us.
The Old Testament is filled with Triumph and strife. We were lost in sin.
The Old Testament sets up the New Testament. -
To know the new testament you have to spend time in the old testament because the whole time in the old testament it is revealing who Jesus is. The prophecy spoke about who he is the whole time and how many encounters that Jesus fulfilled in the New Testament.

The Old Testament shows the journey of God and the israelites and the creation of the Law with all the prophecies being fulfilled as well.
