To know the present is to understand the past. The old testament not only gave us an understanding of how and why the world was formed and how and why ‘man’ was made, but it also gave us an understanding of who God is. It revealed to us the commandments to live by the wisdom and knowledge to live our lives daily it also gave many prophecies of which we were able to see happen because it was documented etc.

The Old Testament introduces Christ and why he was sent to us.

Because we will not fully grasp the wonderful plan of redemption. And that it was all God who orchestrated everything since creation.
-
Because New Testament opens God, it makes us known that there is a God who created heaven and earth.

You won’t have a good understanding of what is coming in the New Testament. You need to lay the foundation in order to build a sound structure.
