Foundational knowledge. Develop the full idea of who God is, why things happened, and what the purpose of the NT is.

We should study the Old Testament because these are the scriptures that Jesus had, so they provide the foundation for all of His life and the New Testament. They provide foreshadowing and prophecy of His birth, life, death, and resurrection. The Old Testament also teaches us about us- our past history and our future hope.

To know God.
To understand the problem of sin.
To know ourselves.
To meet Jesus -
We need to understand the foundation, where it began and who God is.

To gain a foundation for learning how Christianity came about

A lack of knowledge of the Old Testament weakens our understanding of the New Testament because we miss the history laid out before the New Testament that is essential to understanding the New Testament in its proper historical context. The Old Testament is full of history that points to the purpose of Jesus coming to earth and the need for a savior. It is rich in prophesy of the coming of Christ and gives us new depth to understand the context in which Jesus and his disciples lived and how the Lord had been moving throughout history leading to the coming of Jesus.

The Old Testament tells the story of God’s people, their rebellion, their demands to have a king to rule over them, their disobedience and excile. But God loved them and the promise of eternal love evident in the birth, death and resurrection of His only Son Jesus Christ as reported in the New Testament.
We are no different from the Old Testament people always seeking our own council.
If it was not for the fulfillment of the Old Testament promise of through the death and resurrection of Christ we would not receive eternal life. -
The New Testament is the fulfilling of Old Testament prophesy.

Because then we wouldn’t fully understand why Christ had to come.
