One should read the Old Testament because it lays the foundation for the New Testament. It helps gives us the complete story. It tells us why. It also gives us insight to get to know God on a more personal level.
-
to know the work of God throughout his redemption story and for us to understand the culture of His people will give us a better understanding of history itself.
-
To learn about Gods Character. Who he is. What he has done and what he will do.
-
The OT creates a foundation for us to know who God is. As we read through the OT we can see how sin has separated God’s people and He continues to show us how to live our lives according to His commands. The OT sets the stage for redemption in the NT.
-
The Old Testament is the historical redemption and revelation of God and Creation. To know and study it is to help give us biblical lens of truth for the world today.

The Old Testament prophesies about what is to come and be fulfilled. You only have half the story without the old Test.
-
Because the OT is the foundation, without the foundation we cannot understand fully the NT.
-
We wouldn’t know who God is. And it is the opening for the New Testament

The Old Testament leads up to the purpose and reasoning for the New Testament and reasoning for the birth of Jesus Christ.

A lack of knowledge of the Old Testament would leave us as Christians with a far murkier picture of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, as the Old Testament reveals him through much (if not all) of its passages through means of history, poetry and prophecy. Likewise, according to the lecture the Old Testament provides the foundation on which the New Testament is the superstructure – without the foundation of the Old the significance and truth of the New is not as apparent. And lastly, from my personal experience and spiritual upbringing in the church, the Old Testament is always relevant as a way of understanding where we come from, it sets the basis of how we as God’s people should live in contrast to the rest of the world and it reveals our need for a savior to help us live in that way that is holy and acceptable to God.
