Our church’s basic mission statement involves knowing, trusting, loving and following Jesus. I see this order as consistent with the priorities as stated for studying God’s word. For me, I especially need to become more loving, both of God and my neighbor. I also want to study in accordance with the idea in 1 Cor 8:1 (knowledge puffs up but love builds up).

For my life, the most important reason to study for myself is to know and love God followed by growing up in God and serving God. I have come out of a cult and need to learn how to search the Scriptures myself rather than depending on someone to feed me. I have to know how to check the context of the Scriptures to be able to feed myself and recognize Scriptural errors when I see or hear them.

I would rank them in the order they were listed in the question, except swapping the last 2. The start of the Christian journey requires you to know and love God – if you don’t know God, how can you serve him, for example? The last two are less clear to me, but I think that growing up requires serving God as a prerequisite – there is certainly more room for debate on that one.

I believe that all three are essential to operate in kingdom principles. I believe all three reasons are connected as one.

I believe these three reasons are intertwined. By serving God you continue in grow in him and you also increase your knowledge of him and your love for him grows. As you grow in God you become more knowledgeable of him, your love for him grows and you want to serve him more. As your knowledge and love for God grows, as your growth in God grows and matures and as you serve God your relationship with him grows closer and stronger. The more you grow in God the more you understand how much you need him every day and how wonderful his grace is.
