I think geography has been given so little attention by Bible readers because we focus on the who, what, when and why. Somehow the where just never seemed to be as important…until now.

They are so concerned with the doctrines of the Bible they seldom relate the different places, types of life, ways people made a living, etc.

We tend to read into the text our own experiences of our surroundings, not taking into account either the significance of biblical geographical references or the potential differences compared to our point of view.

Most people want to get the truths of the Bible through straight forward teachings. Even geography as taught in schoolhas little interest for many.

Balaam got up in the morning, saddled his donkey and went with the Moabite officials. But God was very angry when he went, and the angel of the Lord stood in the road to oppose him. Balaam was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him. When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand, it turned off the road into a field. Balaam beat it to get it back on the road. Numbers 22:21-23.

“Judah mourns, her cities languish; they wail for the land, and a cry goes up from Jerusalem.
The nobles send their servants for water; they go to the cisterns but find no water. They return with their jars unfilled; dismayed and despairing, they cover their heads.
The ground is cracked because there is no rain in the land; the farmers are dismayed and cover their heads.
Even the doe in the field deserts her newborn fawn because there is no grass. ”
    Jeremiah 14:2-5 (NIV)

Jesus Christ encouraged us to consider the sparrow. This is an example of natural geography being used to illustrate God’s tender care for His creation-especially us!
