Overview and Objectives
Written over a period of about 1,600 years by 40 different authors, the book on which the Christian faith rests tells one story that begins with creation and concludes on the threshold of eternity. The integrity of its historical and geographical record is supported by archeology. The accuracy with which it has been copied and handed down to us has been confirmed by the Dead Sea Scrolls of Qumran. Originating neither in the East nor the West but in the Middle East—the cradle of civilization—the Bible continues to speak not only with spiritual power but also with convincing prophetic accuracy.
When you complete this lesson, you should be able to do the following:
- Recall how the origin and timeless relevance of the Bible support its claim to be the Word of God.
- Cite key Bible texts that explain the doctrine of inspiration.
- Learn key concepts of Bible content by reading Knowing God Through the Whole Bible.
As you proceed through this lesson have the following question in mind.
The Bible is one of the most influential and controversial books of all time. Opinions about the Bible vary from person to person ranging from reverential faith to total skepticism. Do you view the Bible as history, myth, God’s Word, or something else?
