Overview and Objectives
Generation after generation has hoped for the best. We fought wars that would end all wars. We developed educational theories that would produce enlightened, nonviolent children. We conceived technologies that would deliver us from the oppressive slavery of work. Yet we are as close as ever to what the New Testament describes as an endtime marked by wars and rumors of war, earthquakes, disease, loss of affection, and spiritual deception (Matthew 15:19-20; 2 Timothy 3:1-5).
When you complete this lesson, you should be able to do the following:
- Understand why advances in technology do not result in the human race progressing to a higher moral conduct.
- Provide key biblical passages that show a moral decline amidst remarkable human achievements.
- Explain why endtime prophecies are both pessimistic and optimistic concerning the future of the human race.
- Become familiar with endtime chronology by reading What Can We Know About the Endtimes?
As you proceed through this lesson have the following question in mind.
Vernon Grounds comments, “Is the world improving? Is mankind making progress? Technologically, yes; morally, no. Alas, the 20th century is perhaps the bloodiest century in all recorded time. You look at what’s transpiring around the world and, except for the promise of God and His ultimate purpose, you might succumb to despair.” Why is this significant?
