This lesson will discuss the phenomenon of mass incarceration. Students will learn about the explosion in the US prison population that occurred over a 30-year period. They will learn about the social backdrop of this phenomenon and the federal, state, and local policies that caused it to thrive. They will be challenged to articulate effective ways of addressing this issue.
