Overview and Objectives
Lesson Overview
In criminal justice, reentry continues to increase in numbers as more and more prisoners are released from incarceration, yet the recidivism rate is high, with many rearrested within the first six months after release. The needs and barriers in reentry contribute to this high rate of rearrests. This lecture will highlight the reentry needs and barriers and offer principles and practices foundational for effective case management to improve the outcomes of offenders released into the community.
Lesson Objectives
When you complete this lesson, you should be able to:
- Explain the changing trends in reentry.
- Identify the needs, challenges, and barriers in offender reentry.
- Describe criminogenic risks, needs, and protective factors foundational for effective case management and mentoring.
Personal Reflection
As you proceed through this lesson have the following question in mind.
Imagine yourself locked up for ten years. Who do you think would still be there for you? What do you think would be your greatest challenges?
