The Old Testament explains how God created us to be in relationship with Him, and how we continually rebelled, fracturing that relationship. The New Testament shows how God, once again, reached out in mercy to repair the relationship that He wants to have with His creation. If we don’t understand how much God loves us right back from the time we were formed and how much our continued rebellion hurt Him, then we don’t understand in our heart the significance of Jesus’ death and what God has sacrificed repair the relationship.

Many part of the OT are cited in NT, and it is helpful for us to understand to context at that time. For Jesus and people, the OT shaped their background and their perspective. But the most important is that OT is also God’s words that He reveals it through His people. All His plan, His promises which was and will be fulfilled were all recorded in the OT. It can help us more understand God’s characters and His plans. Our understanding will become holistic only we read OT and NT together.

In the New Testament , we learn about our Savior. But why a Savior? The reason is given in the Old Testament . We never read half a book . The richness of the story resides in reading both Testaments.

The story of God’s creation, the fall into sin and God’s plan of redemption spans both the old and new testaments. To understand who God is, why we need a Savior, and why Jesus came we need to read and understand both the OT and NT!
