This lesson introduced four types of questions that students can ask as they study each New Testament book. Which of these four types stood out to you most? Why? How do you think this type of question will help your study of the New Testament?

I think the historical context question stands out most to me. I especially appreciate the line, “Without this kind of context, it is very easy to take texts out of their original context and make them mean something that their original authors could never have intended, or that the original readers could never have understood.” In many ways scriptural interpretations that have been historically abused in the church as a way to disenfranchise or dominate certain groups have been the result of this very thing. They have been scriptures taken from their original context and made to be something the original authors could never have intended. It is a great reminder that every one of us is capable of falling prey to this and we need to invest time into informed reading of the scriptures.

Historical. Without understanding the history of the Jewish people we cannot fully understand the text of the New and Old Testaments in the way that the writers and more importantly Gold wants us to understand these texts.

By understanding the historical background mixed with an understanding of the cultural norms of the day, we can then understand the exegetical breakdown of the book. This then makes it possible to be able to apply the biblical principle into our own daily lives. And isn’t that what it is all about.

The question concerning Historical Background stood out to me most. I don’t usually think about historical background when reading the Bible, let alone taking the time to learn about the background that I’m unaware of. I think looking into the historical background before reading each book will give me a more well-rounded understanding of each book and allow me to understand the why questions that come up when reading a book of the New Testament. Knowing the history allows us to understand the present, or what was present when the books were written and therefore allows us to make personal applications in the future.

The historical background is ver yimportant to me. This will help me to not pull scripture out of context. Undrstanding the audience the particular book was written will answer is Jesus speaking to me or not. It will also help me to understand the mind of those at that time.
