Read 1 Thessalonians 4 and 5. Paul gives a message of hope for the day of the Lord and the second coming of Christ.

  1. What is the guiding tone of Paul’s instructions in these chapters (1 Thessalonians 4-5)? In two or three sentences, summarize Paul’s direction to the Thessalonians in his message of hope.

Paul is encouraging the people to remain in a state of hope and readiness in the face of future uncertainties. He wants them to remain “sober” and “awake”—to live faithful lives of purity and love for one another. The hope that Paul is promoting is a lifestyle centered on industrious readiness and preparation for the trials to come.
