When you think of ancient Rome, what comes to mind? The network of cities connected by roads—all leading to this legendary capital? The pax romana or universal peace that covered the world because of overbearing Roman rule? The Caesars who assumed divine status during this first century? The excesses of power and pleasure, of idolatry and immorality?

That’s all relevant to the Rome behind the book of Romans. Let’s see now how Paul takes all that great theology packed into the first 11 chapters and becomes more systematic about living out the Christian faith in the final five chapters.
