Genesis ended on a hopeful note—Joseph was promoted to prime minister in Egypt and, after a touching reunion with his father and brothers, the extended family of 70 settled safely together in Goshen. However, the land God promised the patriarchs was in Canaan, not Egypt. Conscious of this, Joseph was determined to have his body brought back to the ancestral homeland where God would surely keep his promises.
When Exodus opens, 400 years have passed, and God’s people are now in slavery to a Pharaoh who does not remember Joseph. The promise of numerous descendants is now a reality—but also the cause of anxiety for the king. In this module God’s people will be rescued from their misery … but not before a terrifying confrontation with all the forces Egypt could muster.
