When taking up the Psalms, we’re not leaving stories from Israel’s history behind. They’re going to surface in the Psalms, just as the Psalms will surface in the New Testament. Even in a hymn like Psalm 23—which might be the most well-known chapter in the Bible—we find themes and echoes of earlier stories. Some of these are outlined in the chart below.

Old TestamentPsalm 23
You have led in your steadfast love the people whom you have redeemed; you have guided them by your strength to your holy abode. (Ex 15:13, ESV)He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness . . . (Ps 23:2-3, ESV)
These forty years the LORD your God has been with you. You have lacked nothing. (Deut 2:7, ESV). . . you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. (Ps 23:4, ESV)
Neither said they, Where is the LORD that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through . . . a land of drought, and of the shadow of death . . .? (Jer 2:6, KJV)Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. (Ps 23:4, KJV)

  1. When comparing the verses above, do you notice anything that is different in Psalm 23 from the verses from other books in the Old Testament?
