For the poor will never cease to be in the land; therefore I command you, saying, “You shall freely open your hand to your brother, to your needy and poor in your land.”
Deuteronomy 15:11 NASB

The elites have come to misunderstand YHWH’s priorities. They gravitate toward the “fun stuff”—the festivals—but show little interest in the hard work of loving the least of these and caring for the disadvantaged. They want to celebrate the covenant without keeping the covenant. Instead they abuse and exploit those on the margins of society. For this, Amos promises judgment.

For three sins of Israel,
even for four, I will not relent.
They sell the innocent for silver,
and the needy for a pair of sandals.
They trample on the heads of the poor
as on the dust of the ground
and deny justice to the oppressed . . .
Now then, I will crush you
as a cart crushes when loaded with grain.
Amos 2:6-7 NASB, Amos 2:13 NASB
