One of the ironies in Jonah’s story is that he acts like the repentance of the great city is a failure. He’s converted a city in one day, with minimal effort. And these are not people who are “seekers,” but some of the most violent and sadistic conquerors the world has known.

Jonah’s hopes and visions for success are dramatically different from God’s. Right to the end of his story, he never finds a way to get on the same page. He’s unable to see past his own expectations and disappointment to appreciate God’s work to redeem a city of thousands of people.

It looks ridiculous but it’s an easy mistake to make. We all do it to some degree or another.

  1. Can you identify any people or individuals that, if you’re really honest with yourself, you think should be beyond God’s mercy? (It could be individuals close to you or a group or course of people.)
  1. Why do you think you have that desire for them not to receive God’s mercy?
